Thursday Things

What I’m announcing:

I got a new job! I start on Monday and couldn’t be more thrilled. I’ll be a social media strategist at one of Milwaukee’s largest advertising agencies. This company has such a stellar reputation, and I feel privileged to say I work there. The whole transition will obviously be a challenge in itself; it’s always so hard starting a new job, learning new names, processes, your way to the bathroom…

What I’m looking at:

Our Pinterest DIY Wine Crate Coffee Table is now complete! It turned out even better than I expected. Two weekends ago, Brenton went up to Appleton to make the base and screw everything together with his dad. They also added wheels to make it easier to move. You can check out the original pin here.

Oliver is obviously thrilled as seen by his tongue sticking out. Surprisingly, he wasn’t too freaked out when Brenton brought this in the house (like he gets whenever be bring a large box, suitcase or anything else foreign into the apartment).

If you have any questions about making your own DIY Crate Coffee Table, email me at I didn’t know how many people would be interested in seeing the whole process.

What I’m wearing:

Boot candy a la Pinterest. I’ve been looking at these riding boot toppers for months. Since Brenton’s mom is an expert knitter, I asked if she would make me a pair. Check out the awesome job she did:

These are the original ones from Pinterest in case you’re wondering:

How to make boot socks, thigh high socks, leg warmers.

What I’m eating:

Trader Joe’s Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt Dip. Last week we got a new TJ’s in Brookfield, which Brittney and I flocked to on opening day because we are total food nerds (check out her fun purchases here). Thanks to Carol, I still have 3/4 jar of Cookie Butter left, so I didn’t need to pick that up :)

What I’m entering:

This Fall Baking Giveaway from William Bounds (the awesome company who hosted my Sili Tea Ball Giveaway.) When you “like” their Facebook page, you can enter to win $70 in prizes — including a nutmeg twister and their Sili Gourmet server, brush and pie crust protector (everything you need to bake and serve the perfect pie). Hurry! Contest ends Nov. 19.

What I’m looking forward to:

Remember my trip to Blue’s Egg in Milwaukee last month? Well, I’m so excited to get together with Brittney and Laurie (and their respective hubby’s/hubby’s to be). They are troopers for agreeing to meet Brenton and I at 8 am on a Sunday, but Blue’s Egg is one of the hottest brunch spots in town and I’d rather get there early than wait an hour (patience is not one of my virtues!)

Question: What are your Thursday Things?

Thursday Things

It may be almost November, but tank top weather is still here in Wisconsin (at least until tonight). Even my wedge sandals have made an appearance (despite my naked toes peeking out sans a toenail or two – thank you half marathon training). Here’s what has been going on lately:

1. Don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a Primula Half Moon Teapot gift set! You have until Monday, Oct. 29 to enter (make sure to head on over to the original post). By the way, I’ve loved hearing about all your favorite gifts. Keep those stories coming!

2. My Pampered Chef party is being extended.

You now have until Sunday to order in case you forgot. For info on how to order, see this post.

3. I can’t wait for tonight. I DVR’d Nashville, which I finally get to watch. Has anyone else been sucked in? I knew I would love it when I saw the commercials months ago. Also, Brenton is making Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese for dinner.

Even better? I don’t have to do a thing. Because I will be making…

4. Halloween Cake Balls!

Tonight, making cake balls for our creative department outing tomorrow (a pig roast, mini-bowling and a good amount of drinking—this is advertising after all). Remember these Homemade Funfetti Cake Balls I made for Hillary’s birthday? Well I am going easy this time. Yellow cake mix, Pillsbury Halloween frosting, chocolate Almond Bark…and these cute little sprinkles for a finishing touch.

Question: What’s the funnest work outing you’ve ever been on? What did you do?

Primula Tea Giveaway!

Today is Wednesday. I finally read Sunday’s paper this morning. Yes, it’s been that kind of week. So what better time to introduce a giveaway I know you all will love?

When I need to take it down a few notches and just decompress, I turn to tea (which is also why I have my own tea station at work!).

When the lovely folks over at Primula (they are an innovative company that makes oodles of coffee, tea and beverage systems and accessories) found out I loved tea, they offered to send me their Half Moon Teapot Gift Set with 3 Flowering Teas.

Because I have a lovely Le Creuset Classic Tea Kettle at home, I was interested to see what Primula’s tea kettle would add to my collection. As it turns out, a lot.

For one thing, I can’t brew loose leaf tea in my kitchen kettle. It’s also not something I would travel around the house with.

When Brenton’s parents visited during this weekend, we decided to break out the Primula tea kettle because Brenton’s mom had a cold. She brought some amazing decaffeinated citron tea from Fava Tea Company. I was shocked that not one piece of debris sank into the water.  That’s one of the main reasons why I like using tea bags, but it was so nice to be able to enjoy tea without floaters.

I also loved how portable it was. We carried it into the living room so guests could refill their cups without going into the kitchen.

The teapot gift set includes a 40 ounce Half Moon Teapot with stainless mesh loose tea infuser and 3 flowering green teas with jasmine, which bloom after they have been seeped for a few minutes. I definitely think this would make a cute gift for the holidays and for only $14.99, it’s at the perfect price point.

And now one lucky U.S. She’s on the Run reader will win his or her very own Half Moon Teapot Gift Set from Primula! To enter, simply leave a comment below telling me your favorite gift of all time.

William Bounds Sili Tea Ball Giveaway!

The older I get, the more I have gotten into tea. I love making a hot cup at my new tea station in the afternoon when I need a little comfort or a pick-me-up.

I started out using bagged tea but have quickly added loose leaf tea into my drinking repertoire. One of my favorites is Rishi Tea, made right here in Milwaukee. I received a tin of their Chocolate Chai from Outpost as part of my swag bag last summer for the Eat Local Challenge. Thanks to the William Bounds Sili Tea Ball I received, I was finally able to try it!

I do have a tea ball at home, but the holes are too big and I’m left with a bunch of wayward leaves floating through the tea.

Although a little tea debris did seep out, it fell to the bottom of the cup (due to the ball being submerged on the bottom, I think). I love how durable the Sili Tea Ball is and the modern design. This would be a super cute gift for the tea lovers in your life (included in a gift box with some loose leaf tea). It also comes in a bunch of cute colors like aqua, orange and pink (the one I have is eggplant).

And now one lucky U.S. She’s on the Run reader will win his or her very own Sili Tea Ball from William Bounds! To enter, simply leave a comment below telling me your favorite kind of tea.

Fox Citites Half Marathon: Only 3 Days to Go!

Today I am praying to the running gods. I’m already freaking out about the Fox Cities Half Marathon and now I’ve caught a cold! It started on Tuesday night when I was watching “A Little Bit of Heaven.” (which, BTW, I cried at least 4 times. Watching people die puts me to mush.)

I started getting a sore throat, and I didn’t sleep at all that night because the pain was so bad. I was actually really worried that it was strep. Now, I’m not worried about that but I know it’s a cold. My head is congested, I keep sneezing…you know, the usual.

Last night I took some cough meds before sleeping for a glorious 9 1/2 hours. I’m still not up to par (in the least), but I’m hoping I’ll at least feel good enough to race on Sunday. Question: Have you ever raced with a cold? At what point would you not run?

Yesterday and today are the last two training runs. I skipped yesterday and I don’t think I’m running today because I want to conserve my energy.

Wellspring Cooking Class

For those of you living around the Milwaukee area, there is a cooking class I would like to share with you. On September 27th, Wellspring Organic Farm and Education, Retreat Center is hosting a Healthy Substitutions Cooking Class, teaching folks how to make healthy, organic version of kitchen staples (BTW, Wellspring is in West Bend, WI).

Take ketchup for example, a 2 tablespoon serving contains 8 grams of sugar. Luckily for condiment lovers, enjoying ketchup does not need to be a diet buster. At the cooking class, KC Thorson, local chef and organic cooking coach, will be sharing her recipes and tips for healthy versions of household favorites like ketchup, mayo, white and BBQ sauces.

The class will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Wellspring located at 4382 Hickory Rd. West Bend, WI 53090. The cost is to join is $20 for those who register prior to September 25, and $25 for those after.

To sign up for the class or learn more, check out Wellspring’s website.

Playing Hookie + Almondina Winner!

Have you ever wondered why they say sick as a dog?

If you think about it, dogs are hardly ever sick. In fact, I’ve never even heard of a dog having a cold or the flu.

But that phrase has certainly been true in this household over the past few weeks. On Sunday, I woke up with a tickle in by throat. To make myself feel better, I headed to the gym for a tougher-than-usual Total Body Toning class. I felt terrible when I got home. And as I write this on Saturday (7 days later!), I still have this nasty cold. Except now I can’t talk. B has been making fun of me all day because all I can do is whisper.

So this week has been filled with a lot of reading and movie watching. I finished Nicholas Sparks’s novel, Dear John, a few days ago and we watched the movie last night. I don’t know about you, but it irks me to no end when the movie version doesn’t follow the ending in the book.

In the book ending, John and Savannah don’t end up together but in the movie they do, which completely changes the overall theme of the book. As much as I wanted them to have a happy ending, I feel like I can’t trust the movie when I know what is really supposed to happen.

On another note, I’m becoming completely obsessed with Emily Giffin’s books (she’s the author of Something Borrowed, which they also turned into a movie last year). Now I’m reading her fifth book.

So until I get better, I see much more reading in my future.

Almondina Winner!

And the winner of two boxes of healthy Almondina cookies are…

Carol, email your address to me at, and your cookies will soon be on their way!

Question: What are you reading right now?

Almondina Review + Giveaway!

Last week, the folks at Almondina contacted me about tying their cookies.

Now, I’m not one to turn down sweets. But what really drew me to this company was the fact that their product was nutritious. In fact, their mission is “to put a delicious healthful cookie on every table.” But would a health cookie taste good?

Actually, it took just one bite of their Bran Treats to convince me. I love how each biscotti-like cookie has big chunks of raisins and almonds. As an added bonus, each 3-cookie serving has only 99 calories, yet 2g fiber and 3g protein. They are also cholesterol-free, have no added salt or fat and have zero preservatives.

Other flavors include Pumpkin Spice, Choconut, Chocolate Cherry. Gingerspice, Cinnaroma, Sesame and Original.

Crunchy and not overly sweet, these cookies would be delicious served alongside tea in the afternoon or even topped with fresh goat cheese for a pre-dinner nibble.

Almondina cookies are sold nationwide, including stores like Trader Joe’s, TJ Maxx and Woodmans.

But I’d like to offer two boxes of these amazing cookies to one lucky reader!

TO ENTER (You have three chances to win!):
1. Leave a comment on this post telling what your favorite cookies is.
2. Follow me on Twitter @ShesOnTheRun (and leave me a comment telling me you’ve done so)
3. Tweet “@ShesOnTheRun is giving away Almondina Cookies!″
